AT&GWU - Alliance between the Left and SInn Féin now possible
The IRA's declaration that the 'war is over' opens up new possibilities for co-operation between the Left and Sinn Fein,' said Michael O'Reilly, Regional Secretary of the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union. 'Co-operation between the Left and Sinn Fein is now a viable and welcomed possibility. It can redraw the political map in the Republic and present a real challenge to the establishment parties. 'Of course, IRA deeds must match their words. But it is clear the Sinn Fein leadership is determined to fully implement the Good Friday Agreement and commit the entire republic movement to fully peaceful and democratic means.' 'Co-operation between the Left and Sinn Fein would be a sensible development. On issues of economic development, redistribution of wealth and public service investment there is considerable agreement - more so than with the right-wing parties.' 'The basis of a future alliance is already in place. The Labour Party, Sinn Fein and other progressive parties and independents make up the second largest bloc in the Dail. Labour and Sinn Fein hold an effective majority of seats on the largest local authority - Dublin city. Co-operation could see these groupings become a major electoral force at both national and local level. 'Co-operation will not be easy. Mutual suspicions and competition in many constituencies will make progress slow. However, there is no reason why informal discussions cannot begin. This could set the foundation for more broad-based discussions on policies and strategies for mutual advantage.' 'New political alliances must emerge if we are to address the challenges a new Ireland will be facing. An alliance between the Left and Sinn Fein could do just that, forging a radical and exciting breakthrough in Irish politics". END. |
