Comgressman Eliot Engel response to the IRA statement

"Today, the IRA made a historic announcement that it will end its armed campaign and engage in the democratic process through peaceful means. This is a dramatic step forward to ending a long and bloody conflict that has left a trail of misery, death, and tragedy. This is a historic opportunity for everyone engaged in the long struggle for peace and security in the north of Ireland to move the peace process forward. I believe that Congress and the White House are committed to working with all sides, organizations, parties, and governments to keep moving ahead.

"While we are happy about these developments, the struggle for peace and justice goes on, and it extends to the United States where Irish nationals such as Malachy McAllister are under constant threat of deportation. In response to the unprecedented IRA move for peace, the United States government should suspend the deportation of Irish nationals, such as Mr. McAllister."
