Statement of the Press Office of the Central Committee of AKEL - Cypriot political party
AKEL greets the decommissioning of the arms of the Irish Republican Army, as it has been confirmed by the independent committee of international observers which followed the procedure. AKEL considers the disarmament of the IRA as a decisive step in the peace process in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, AKEL calls on the British Government and the Unionist political parties to resume negotiations as soon as possible. It calls on the Democratic Unionist Party to conduct face-to-face talks with the Sinn Fein party. Finally it expresses the wish that the Good Friday Agreements be fully implemented.
