Statement on Sinn Fein's plan for special conference on policing issues

Monday 15 January 2007
The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone today welcomed Sinn Fein's decision to call a special conference on policing issues in Northern Ireland:
'I warmly welcome the decision of Sinn Fein to call a special conference on policing in Northern Ireland. This a generous move, which meets the latest stated concerns of Unionist parties regarding sharing power with the nationalist community. Our experience in London is that every community has the right to be policed by its peers. Democratic accountability of the police service to elected representatives will be essential to make the service truly representative of all communities in Northern Ireland. All political parties should now support the restoration of the power sharing assembly and executive to allow the process of reconciliation started by the Good Friday Agreement to move forward.' ENDS
